Pet food lacks the safety regulations of human food. The result, sadly, is that most pet food manufacturers use inexpensive meat, grains, vegetables, and other ingredients that failed to meet safety standards for human consumption. Many of those ingredients are contaminated with heavy metals.

In a 2025 study, researchers tested 45 commercial cat foods and 48 commercial dog foods for heavy metal contamination. They found that every single sample of pet food was contaminated with at least two heavy metals. [*] The three most common heavy metals found were:

Arsenic (100% of pet foods)
Chromium (100%)
Mercury (98%)

Lead and cadmium were also present in many of the brands.

The authors noted that their study “underscores the extensive presence of toxic metal contamination in pet foods, posing a significant risk to pet health due to ongoing exposure to multiple toxic metals.” [*]

A similar 2021 study analyzed 100 common commercial cat and dog foods sold nationally in the United States. Tests revealed that 100% of pet food samples contained mercury at levels above the legal limit. [*]

The vast majority of pet food contains heavy metals, making it a major contributor to heavy metal accumulation in both cats and dogs.

Heavy Metals in Water: an Issue for Dogs (and Some Cats)

Most indoor pets drink household tap water, which is generally considered safe and contains regulated levels of heavy metals. However, if your pets go outdoors on a regular basis, the water they drink from gutters, puddles, ponds and streams increases their risk of heavy metal contamination. Outdoor water doesn’t have the same filtration as tap water and can be a major cause of heavy metal buildup.

For example, after rainfall, water in puddles or gutters may have swept up traces of oil, gasoline and car exhaust from the street. All of these contain high levels of heavy metals. In addition, many natural bodies of water, like creeks, streams, or lakes, accumulate pollution from agricultural and manufacturing runoff and contain unsafe heavy metal levels.

Pets that drink from these outdoor water sources are at risk of heavy metal buildup. This is mostly a concern for dogs that walk outdoors every day, but it also applies to outdoor cats.

Signs of Heavy Metal Exposure in Cats and Dogs

Your pets can’t tell you how they feel, so it’s important to keep a lookout for markers of heavy metal exposure.

Common signs that your pet may have high heavy metal burden include:

Vomiting
Diarrhea
Loss of appetite
Sudden weight loss
Muscle tremors
Shaking
Uncoordinated movement
Lethargy; loss of interest in exercise or playing

If you notice several of the above symptoms, and they persist over time, your pet may have a buildup of heavy metals.

How to Detox Heavy Metals in Pets
